“余坦平”这个名字很普通,他之前问过妈妈,为什么取一个这样淡得跟白开水一样得名字,妈妈说:大姐出生的时候,再想要个儿子,所以取名为“连弟”希望接下来就生个弟弟,后来我二姐出生了,又取名为“带弟”,可能大家会认为妈妈重男轻女,其实在面朝黄土背朝天的农民来讲,男孩不仅仅是传宗接代,更是一种生产力,我妈妈说,在做我月子的时候,外面下着雨,就取名为“坦平”希望我往后的人生不要像爸爸妈妈那么苦,有一个平坦的人生,这或许是一个母亲对自己孩子一种最朴实的期待:期待是期待,但现实是现实。余坦平的早年生活却并不是一帆风顺的。1986年,他出生于江西上饶的一个普通农户家庭。当时,中国虽然已经改革开放,但这个闭塞的小山村依然经济落后,而余家更因为孩子多,成为远近闻名的贫困户。据余坦平回忆:小时候,人家的孩子已经都有新衣服穿,但我和我姐姐穿的衣服是从我三叔家捡回来的。面对物质贫乏,余坦平只能上山采野果果腹……

放弃学业之后,余坦平开始用自己稚嫩的肩膀扛起生活的重担,到江西省会南昌谋生活。在一年半的时间里,余坦平做了很多工作,也经历过一些令人心酸的事情。由于学历不够、身上盘缠不足,他的工作时断时续,很多时候只能流浪过街头、夜宿公园,他做过饭店的传菜员,加工过皮鞋,干过室内装修工,直到后来进入了汽车维修行业。
